FAQ

At ZMDHair, we strive to be the ultimate source of the latest scientific information about hair loss, hair loss treatment and hair transplantation.

Below you will find a few of the most commonly asked questions regarding these topics.  Should you have any questions that you may want to get an answer you can contact us on our social media account and we will do our best to get the correct information to you.

  • Why do we mostly lose the hairs on the top of our scalp?

    • The most common cause of hair loss in men and women is known as male pattern baldness.  Male pattern baldness is also referred to as androgenetic alopecia.  As the name suggests, the main cause of this type of baldness is based on genetics.  In patients who are suffering from male pattern baldness, the hair follicles on the top of their scalp will begin to thin and eventually fall in response to a biproduct of testosterone known as DHT.  The hairs on the side and back of the scalp on the other hand are immune to the effects of DHT and thus do not thin or fall.  This is the reason why people suffering from male pattern baldness lose the hairs on the top of their scalp and not the hairs on the side or back of the scalp.

  • How common is hair loss in men and women?

    • Hair loss is exceedingly common in men and women.  In fact approximately 50 percent of men will complain about hair loss and hair thinning by the age of 50 and most will state that it affects their self image.  Women are not immune to hair loss either.  Research shows that at least 1 in 5 women will suffer from hair loss in their lifetime.  Women are even less likely to get treatment for their hair loss.

  • How can I figure out how much more hair I am going to lose without treatment?

    • The answer to this question is complicated.  There is no definitive way to figure out how much more hair someone is going to lose during their life.  Genetics, gives us a good indication but it is not perfect.  Overall, we can determine the pattern of someone's hair loss and their progression via a good family history, personal history of hair loss and treatments that have been used so far.  Norwood classification in men and Ludwig classification in women can give us a clue to the natural progression of hair loss.

  • What are my options for treatment of my hair loss?

    • There are several options for treatment of hair loss. Medication is usually the first line of treatment.  This can be done via oral medication or topical medication.  Nutraceuticals can play a major role in treatment of hair loss.  More recently, genetic based medication and nutraceuticals has been shown to have a higher efficacy in treatment of hair loss.  Scalp injections have also shown positive effect in treatment of hair loss.  Wigs can also be worn as a solution to hair loss and thinning hair.  However, the most effective treatment to hair loss continues to be hair transplantation.

  • How does Hair Transplantation work?

    • Hair transplantation works by grafting hairs from the back of the scalp and implanting them to the top of the scalp or any other location on the skin that needs new hairs placed.

  • Does hair transplant really work?

    • The quick answer is that hair transplantation does work.  In fact, in our practice there is higher than 98% chance that the transplanted hairs will grow in their new location.

  • Does hair transplantation hurt?

    • Hair transplantation is not painful.  In fact, hair transplantation is typically performed under local anesthetics with little to no discomfort.  There is no need for general anesthesia.  Most patients can tolerate the procedure with simple over the counter pain medication.

  • Is there any scars associated with hair transplantation?

    • The older strip technique (FUT) did leave a linear scar in the back of the scalp.  However, the newer Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) techniques that we employ in our clinic are virtually scarless and leave no signs of a procedure.

  • Who is a good candidate for a hair transplant procedure?

    • Hair transplantation is a great surgery for most patients who are seeking to restore thinning or lost hair.  In fact, hair transplantation is the only method available to grow hair where previous hairs have perished.  There are some patient's who are not a good candidate.  Most patients who are not a good candidate have too much hair loss (Norwood 6 or 7) to be able to get enough hair to cover the balding region.

  • What is the recovery of hair transplantation like?

    • The recovery process for hair transplantation is generally very well tolerated.  Most patients return to work within a short period of time.  Typically, the first 2 days, there is a dressing covering the donor site.  Once this is removed, the donor site can be cleaned normally.  The recipient sites (where new grafts were placed) needs to be handled a little bit more carefully.  For the 1st 3 days the region is sprayed with saline to keep it moist.  After that it can be gently washed using water and gentle shampoo.  After 3rd day a loose hat or head covering can be used to cover up the graft site.  After 10 days the area of the graft can be cleaned normally with normal shampoo.

  • How much is the cost of hair transplantation?

    • The cost of hair transplantation can vary depending on several factors.  First, is the actual amount of hair that can be transplanted.  In most instances, the more hair that needs to be transplanted, the higher the cost.  However, mmost patients find that hair transplantation can be cheaper than continuing with treatments that are not giving them optimal results.

  • What is a reasonable outcome from a hair transplantation procedure?

    • In our practice we have an over 98% sucess rate.  Utilizing the latest in follicular unit extraction technique, we can guarantee our results.  A reasonable outcome would be dependent on the amount of hair loss that you have.  Generally, the 1st procedure is done in a manner that will give you coverage over any area that is balding.  If you want the type of density that exists on the sides of your scalp, then usually a 2nd procedure is needed to get there.
